RESULT OF THE 2011 METROBANK - MTAP DepEd MATH CHALLENGE (Elimination Round)

            dm5s2011

THE STORY OF THE BALD ANGEL
(credits to the family of Joseph Ray B. Yang)

            Picture
Joseph Ray Banal Yang (2009 Accreditation & Equivalency Test Passer) also known as Oti, Rambo, Totikun, Ztikiz, Otep Obed, was a young man who has ventured into this world for 16 years. He may have lived a short life, but his existence will echo throughout the time. It’s not about how short you lived; it’s not about how your life ended either, but rather, how you have lived it. He has battled the disease for 3 years and there was not a single day you’d see him weak nor hear him complain
Oti is short for Sioti, a Chinese word which means the youngest male child. Oti, the youngest of the 5 children of Reynaldo and Sylvia Yang was the most mature, most patient, and the most obedient, had the strongest faith, and had the biggest nostrils amongst the five. (Sorry Oti, hehe love you)
Rambo, his nickname given to him for his character exemplified great strength and courage. He feared nothing-he even conquered each of his family members’ fear. With his God-rooted strength, he even shared this gift with us, making him the source of light for us all.
Ztikz was an avid computer gamer. His agile hands and sharp mind can catch you off guard in the game. He loved sports; he played basketball, softball, table tennis, golf, swimming, scuba diving, archery, chess, and ballroom dancing. But due to the disease he had, all activities that require mobility and a stability base had been stretched out from his life. Computer games helped him cope combined with his faith and possibility. These activities were only spices in life, but not life itself.
Otep was an academic scholar. A brain like his could achieve a lot and could nail any exam. He was about to take his first year in college; he wanted to become a doctor. He wanted to cure a lot of people and help them with their sufferings.
Totikun is a Chinese-Japanese combination. Sioti (Chinese) and “kun” (Japanese). Kun is a Japanese suffix used to denote respect or to acknowledge a younger male. His good character has earned him lots of friends and praises. He was a good leader, capable of leading an entire crew whose members would follow his every command with respect and no hesitation.
And the name Obed is analogous with the Arabic word “Abd”, meaning “servant, worshipper”. He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the age of 13. With his Rambo trait, he faced the disease head-ona accepted all the pain and suffering with a smile. He has learned a lot of medical terms, interventions, and pathophysiology of his disease with his Otep character. His curiosity to know never  ceased, even if the information was very painful to hear. Playing computer games helped him to ignore pains, Ztikz and Totikun worked hand in hand, to win games at the same time winning new friends. Oti’s discipline was very solid-selective foor derivation, painful diagnosis tests, medications and its side effects, and even the mystery boxes in peat society Ibyang told him to open, he never said no to. He did it all, without a single word of resistance. With God inside his heart, he never let a day pass without thanking the Lord, and never questioned Him. Every time he experienced pain, he would not tell us, instead he would shut his eyes for a moment, compose himself and pray. He even told papa, “Papa, h’wag ka magagalit at kuquestionin  si Lord ha?”
When we hear the word Cancer, we are terrified. We find it as an anatagonist of life, and usually, Cancer connotes death. But for science and researchers, Cancer cells are one of the coolest things on earth. Cancer cells are immortal, cancer cells mutate (change of nature), cancer cells proliferate (increase rapidly in numbers), cancer cells are capable of forming bridges to facilitate transport of nutrition to themselves, and cancer cells can infiltrate and eat up the entire human body.
Despite the vast power cancer cells possess, there are still things that cancer cannot take away your happiness, because to be happy and to be sad is a choice. Oti chose happiness. Cancer cannot take your family and friends away from you. Cancer cannot strip off the greatest gift – LOVE. Cancer can take away your life but it can never ever, ever devour your SOUL. Cancer doesn’t have the power… the power to destroy my brother. Why? Because there is one simple answer…Because he chose not to!
Oti understood some of the biggest secrets of life at an early age. This is his own original composition and he would like to share it with you…
“Every day we walk down the streets seeing people with scars that show us their past, people with disabilities that kept on living with us even through hardships in life. People that are even more stronger than we think from the battles that left them their scars which made them who they are today.
Strong men of today didn’t just popped up and show to the world that they are mighty. Rather they have succeeded to conquer their fears, challenges, hardships, and sufferings which we thought was nuisance in living as a person. Now what we want is to redirect our line of scope into a clearer and more understandable point of view. Sufferings lead us closer to God Himself. In every obstacle in life that we face, every possible challenges, decision making, and hurdles that we must finish, it gives us an opportunity to change and to recreate ourselves. Weak people will just sit in their own little corner and think everything that isn’t good for them or ask many questions and just not do something! How we finish our race, how we climb the highest mountains, and how we swim the deepest ocean is what makes us “us.” Remember that when you think you are going to fall and will not reach your goal, God will be there to save you and lets you finish what you’ve started. Just believe and have faith that you can do it, and ask help from His Son.
News, magazines, Oprah, and internet these provide us information on those people who achieve remarkable recognition, people who gives inspiration to mankind. Who are these people? These people are the people that have less but strive more. Think about this, we see and hear news about handicaps who achieve great goals in life and what could be the reason that they are aired on t.v. than other achievers? It’s because for us to open our eyes from what we have more, more things to do than them, more things to use with our body but they have less still they strive to be different, they want to make full use of what they have as little. Gift that has been given to us by God, we need to use our gift to greater good, to make full use of what full use of what we have and to have faith with as little as we have. Focus more on things which you have today rather than what you don’t have or suffer all your life from discontentment. “The one who is faithful in very little is also faithful in as much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest as much” Luke 16:10.
We usually ask, may questions regarding our current problems in life, like why do am I inflicted by his disease? Or what could be the reason why I’m living this way (bad situation)? You see we really don’t know why we are leaving that kind of problem right now; no one will ever know the answer. What we need to do is to find the “reason behind” the happenings lately in our life, how it connects every details and somehow make sense. Everything that is happening to us has a good side and will eventually connect to our previous experience. We just need to be patient and think about it.
Most of the population today spends their time thinking about their problems, miseries, and doubts. We often miss the thought and the good things that we have. Rather than asking questions about our problems why don’t we star asking questions regarding to what we have now, and what good we have? Like why do I have these talents?  Then start speculating, maybe I was born to entertain people, maybe I am here to make a difference in the world, or start with my surroundings. Rather than dwelling on things less important, think for a second, what can we do with these given gifts?
From what I’ve said “those who have less strive more”. We said that live life to the fullest and think that today will be our last. But we still don’t do something and let each day pass unless we truly are in the situation that we are implanted with time bombs that will explode in a certain time. Yes, it’s hard for us to think that way because we don’t want to lie in our death bed just yet. I have experienced this once in my life, that I know I have less time than other people around me. And then I said to myself, why would I spend time idle and doing nothing and letting each opportunity pass by? I have realized till then the essence and the meaning of life, that when there is opportunity then act on it. Life is not a computer game where you can save and load your progress if you missed a thing or two or have mistaken in some point. And also I said to myself, if ever I would go I must do everything I need to do, say anything what I have to say and for some reason leave something good behind. We’ll never know when we’ll get hit by a car in the streets, never woke up from sleep or be choked by what we are eating and just… die… Whatever the last thing we do, may it be we argue with our partner, say harsh thins to our neighbor or parents which we didn’t mean, that would be the last memory of us we left behind. How then can we reconcile to the things we’ve done if we’re gone in a blink of an eye? Forgive those who have sinned against us and kept their burden for the rest of their life? I say we love one another and always choose to do good things, forgive those who sinned against us, love our neighbors, our enemies. God has loved us wholeheartedly and unconditionally, isn’t it time that we learn and love every person as how God loved us? Rejoice! And what must be done. Entrust your life to God whatever many come in and out, have faith that you will be ok and just enjoy the life that God has given you, rather than thinking too much about negative thoughts and doing useless things.
Having faith in oneself is like having faith in God.”
In sign language he told us that night…
                        “I Love you…”
The binding force of our entire family.
                        “Sorry…”
We thought… Sorry for what? Sorry because you ad to leave us? Sorry because you feel that you have been holding us back? But whatever it was for, you have done nothing wrong.
We love you ti…what you have contributed to our being, our family and our friends is something we will treasure for all of eternity. His greatest contributions are the 2 most powerful forces a man can equip himself with: Love and Faith.
May you rest in peace Joseph, thank you and we love you so much.

            RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP: EMPOWERED AND FORMIDABLE

            LEADERSHIP is an “EXTRA CHALLENGE”.

Head, manager, person in charge, organizer, principal, boss, chief,  director…These are some of the terms that mark a leader. Before entering the world of leadership he would ask himself if he is ready or equipped enough to stand for his direction and face those uncertainties, difficulties, and hurdles. One should first furnish himself how to be a leader with FEAR: A leader who is Formidable, Empowered, Active and Responsible. Most of the leaders are knowledgeable enough of what leadership is, what the functions and the dynamics of a leader, how to be a good leader and some of the irrefutable laws of leadership. These things are very helpful but a so-called leader should not be satisfied and contented by these theories in order to be successful. All we need is to experience it because the more we practice, the more we become efficient and effective, Nothing More and Nothing Less!
Leaders are not only trained to be intellectual leaders but with healthy heart, body and spirit. Leaders with high personality and morale and most importantly, leaders nurtured to develop “ATTITUDE” which is the answer to the question “What does it take to make the world of leadership 100%” If we will correlate Mathematics as an exact science and we will have the assumption that A-Z = 1-26. We will find out that…
             It is not H+A+R+D+W+O+R+K…
            8+1+18+4+2+23+15+18+11=98%
            It is not K+N+O+W+L+E+D+G+E…
            11+14+15+23+12+5+7+5=96%
            But it is the A+T+T+I+T+U+D+E…
            1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5=100%

It is one attitude that makes leadership 100% towards the world of life.
Considering attitude, there are different styles of Leadership.

ï     There are leaders who are vulnerable servants, who need people as much as they need them.

ï     There are submissive leaders who do not rely on domineering self-assertion who follow the principle of submitting to one another, who listen responsibly, admit when they are wrong, show willingness to change and mix gentleness with firmness.

ï     Intellectual leaders, who are not highly intelligible but knowledgeable and with skills to move others to be credible and confident gain good foundation.

ï     There are leaders with Intestinal Fortitude, who have the guts and crusading spirit.

ï     There are leaders with increased productivity who are enthusiastic to do work and have more pep to more.
These are the styles of leadership that most of the leaders are practicing knowingly and unknowingly, but no matter what style he is working with

“Everybody is a leader on his own right!”

If a leader has the freedom to be a leader of his own right, he should be enclosed with the right attitude for him to allow his personal enrichment and influence the rhythm of service.

In the Philippine setting, parts of the attitude that most leaders should have and serve as characteristics of leaders to enlarge the scope of our leadership service are the following:
            1.     A leader must be humane (makatao). “Lahat ng namumuno ay may mga anyong tao ngunit hindi lahat ay nagpapakatao.” The task of the manager as a leader is integration of selfhood-that point of wholeness as a human being.

            2.     A leader must be "marunong makipagkapwa tao". A leader must respect the individuality, the dignity and the needs of everyone in the organization. To do this, he must create a unity of purpose among people.

            3.     A leader must be "marunong makisama". A leader who is ``makatao and marunong ng pakikipagkapwa tao`` shares his time and talents for the good of the organization. He should have the concern for others and must be responsive to the needs and desires of the people of the organization.

            4.     A leader must be "marunong magtrabaho". Because of his sense of mission, a leader believes in his own ability to lead, has love for the works he is doing and devotion to the people he is serving. Lastly,

            5.     A leader must be God-fearing (may takot sa Diyos). Christian leadership means considering the needs of the people he is serving before his own seeking their good, encouraging their spiritual growth. As Christian leader, he must not control lives but serve people’s needs that God considers great!
These are the traits of an effective leader and having these, a leader
can be strong, as well as admit to times of weakness, struggle and difficulty; a leader can be giving, but can admit to needing to receive refreshment and encouragement. More over, a leader cannot only provide direction, wisdom and insight but can also acknowledge uncertainty and limitations.

Knowing these traits or guidelines of the leader, let us have a check of ourselves! Let us ask personally ourselves:
Am I a LEADER Or a SLAVE DRIVER? and analyze:

            ·        Are you a leader who              …Inspires enthusiasm   or
A slave driver who                       …enslaves his members?
            ·        Are you a leader who              …leads his members  or
A slave driver who                       …pushes his members?
            ·        Are you a leader who              …bases his result on the cooperation and organization?  or
A slave driver who                       …bases his result on any tyrannization
            ·        Are you a leader who              …talks in terms of “tayo” or “natin”  or
A slave driver who                       …talks in terms of “ako” or :akin”?
            ·        Are you a leader who              …control the organization without a force  or
A slave driver who                       …controls the organization with a force?
            ·        Are you a leader who              …arouses the confidence of the people  or
A slave driver who                       …keeps the members fearful?

You alone can answer these questions. There’s a room for improvement. Learn from your experiences. Take them to heart. Apply them to your life.

John Maxwell says “Everything rises and falls on leadership” Most of the people don’t believe that, but it is true!  The more an individual try to do something in life, the more he will find that leadership makes the difference. As you work and lead remember that “LEADERSHIP DETERMINES YOUR SUCCESS”.
You are a leader! And being so, pray for your success, pursue your dreams, desire excellence, become the person you were created to be, learn to lead-not just for yourself, but for the people who follow behind you, be united to build people and make the defining difference in other people`s lives.
